Police arrest suspect in deadly Beatrice shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Beatrice Police Department has arrested a suspect following a deadly shooting early Tuesday morning.

In coordination with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service, authorities arrested 31-year-old Justis Barnhouse in Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said he was taken into custody on an arrest warrant and is facing charges of second-degree murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Around 5:30 a.m., the Beatrice Police Department received a call from someone who heard three loud bangs followed by screaming.

Officers were sent to an area near North Ninth and Summit streets where they found a man lying in the street.

According to the police department, the man was conscious and told officers he had been shot.

The man — 37-year-old Joshua May — was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police said no further information will be released at this time.
