Lincoln community fills Wyuka Cemetery for Memorial Day ceremony

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Rows of American flags waved in the wind on Monday at Wyuka Cemetery as dozens gathered to honor fallen soldiers for Memorial Day.

The ceremony included a rifle volley, Girl Scout troops laying roses on graves and several guest speakers.

“Their courage, sacrifice, and selflessness will never be forgotten, and it means so much to see our community gathered here in remembrance today,” said Chloe Biester, Wyuka’s Interim Manager.

Many different groups got the chance to lay wreaths in remembrance of each branch of the military.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue rang a bell to honor those who gave their lives to protect others.

The community showed its immense support for our Armed Forces.

“There are so many people that you can forget, but don’t forget those who have given their all so you can walk around this park for free,” said Ted Silcock, a Lincoln veteran.

Seeing how many people showed up goes a long way for veterans, especially on Memorial Day.

“To me, it’s a different but some type of level of appreciation for those who have died serving,” said Neil Larson, a Lincoln veteran. “I kind of like the fact that they’re still being recognized for their service.”

Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly shared pieces of Nebraska history.

He also paid tribute to Master Sergeant First Class Noah Tietjens, who died earlier this year in Kuwait.

“We recently gained some perspective with the death of Master Sergeant First Class Noah Tietjens in the Iranian conflict,” Kelly said. “He was a resident in Bellevue, Nebraska. The family and state leaders were there when that flag-draped coffin arrived in Dover, Maryland, and again when it was escorted to Offutt Air Force Base.”

The Lincoln Memorial Day Observance Association worked to rekindle patriotism and pay well-earned respect on Memorial Day.
