Grand Island man charged with assault after confrontation at ICE protest

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KLKN) — A Grand Island man was charged today after an assault in February. The incident occurred during a school walkout where Grand Island students participated in an ICE protest.

Michael Brown, 54, was charged with third-degree assault by mutual fight and attempted third-degree assault after he pled no contest in court today.

Two other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Grand Island Police Department (GIPD) said Brown saw the students walking and yelled comments supporting ICE. A student then threw a water bottle which struck Brown in the face. Brown then exited his vehicle and approached the students. The situation escalated to a physical altercation between the juveniles and Brown.

Four teenagers were also charged with third-degree assault.
