DHHS releases health alert for Maskenthine Reservoir in Stanton

STANTON COUNTY, Neb. (KLKN) — The Maskenthine Reservoir, a public lake and recreational area in Stanton, is now subject to a health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services issued the alert after samples taken from the lake measured above the threshold for microcystin, a toxin released by blue-green algae.

The threshold for microcystin is 8 parts per billion (ppb), which means the level in the Maskenthine Reservoir is high enough to pose health risks.

During the health issue, swimming beaches will be closed. The public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to water. Recreational boating and fishing are still permitted.

Nebraska DHHS said 57 other public lakes were sampled, although HABs can develop after sampling and reporting. They said the public should be cautious if they see signs of algal blooms, which is a fast increase in the amount of algae in the water.
