Google shares update on Lincoln data center

Lincoln, Neb. (KLKN) — The Mayor’s Resilience Lincoln Roundtable meeting gave community members the opportunity to ask questions about Google’s North Lincoln data center.

Google representatives and city leaders discussed everything from water use to how the project fits into Lincoln’s future.

They also provided an update on the project’s current operations, including who’s already working at the site as construction continues.

“For our operational data center so far, we have a couple hundred individuals that are on site performing work that’s going to be there even after we pass our construction stage,” Google facility manager, Jake Laney, said.

City leaders say they’ve taken a cautious approach to data center development, saying the city has the water and energy resources to support the current project, but wants to preserve those resources for future growth.

“Going forward, we want to allocate our resources to supporting new neighborhoods, schools, green spaces, small businesses. This means that we are not looking to add any more data centers to Lincoln for the foreseeable future,” Chief Sustainability Officer, Kim Morrow, said.

City leaders said the discussion was meant to give people a better understanding of how the current data center operates.
