Reports of burglaries to flooded homes in Dannebrog

(KHGI) — Law enforcement officers are stepping up their presence in Dannebrog after getting reports of break–ins in the area following devastating flooding.
The devastation from the flooding in Dannebrog has many residents just beginning their clean up this week.
“We’ve torn all the sheet rock out, we’re just trying to get things dried out,” said Dannebrog resident Eric Neilsen.
Neilsen, along with neighbors on his street, say they have been victims of burglaries and other suspicious activity.
“The night after the flood went through, two neighbors down the street both of them reported that people had gotten in their house and stole their guns,” said Neilsen.
Fire department officials say that they want residents to be mindful and look out for each other.
“Just be very aware of late night traffic and stuff, and don’t be scared to call 911,” said Dannebrog Fire Department Chief Terry Webb.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Office has increased police presence in the area making sure vacant homes stay safe.
“We really appreciate the Howard County Sheriff’s Department doing that for us,” said Neilsen. ” I know myself and my wife we just feel a lot more secure about it.”
Fire Chief Webb said that the best thing residents can to protect their homes during the clean up is keep them locked.
“At night time the best thing for you to do is make sure your doors are locked,” said Webb. “With the weather the way it is nothing is gonna dry at night anyway, the high humidity and so forth so, just make sure your place is secured and that you neighbors know what going on.”
According to Chief Webb, despite the reported burglaries, he believes the town has come a long way.
“The community pulled together in a time of need and we have had a tremendous amount of support from people volunteering from providing supplies, it’s just really been great,” said Webb. “I feel like we’ve come a long way since we started this.”
Chief Webb along with the Howard County Sheriff’s Department stressed the importance of making sure residents report any suspicious activity or vehicles.
They also want to reiterate that residents are lock up their homes and have their belongings secure.
