Athlete of the Week: Lincoln Southeast’s Haleigh Bauer

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – On Sep. 24, Lincoln Southeast volleyball star Haleigh Bauer left her mark on program history, recording her 1000th kill as a junior.

“I knew I was close before the game even started,” Bauer said. “But when I hit that thousandth kill, people were holding signs up. The announcer said it, so I knew that it happened. It was great. It was really exciting, and just to know that I have that support here feels awesome. And to know that everybody was cheering me on – it just felt great.”

Bauer, an outside hitter, accumulated 758 kills over her freshman and sophomore year, which gave her national attention. In June, Bauer announced her commitment to play college volleyball at South Dakota State University.

“I think that it just prepares me for knowing how hard I have to work to reach those milestones, especially at the next level,” Bauer said. “And I think kind of having a plan in place now will help me continue to build upon what I already have built. And I think that’ll help me grow as a person and a player.”

Bauer has helped the Knights win five of their past seven matches, including a tournament win over Elkhorn. She currently sits at a team-leading 269 kills this year, with three matches remaining in the regular season. The Knights’ next match is a district game against Grand Island on Oct. 6.
