Mission says weather has impacted their operations

The People’s City Mission said they’re struggling to serve the people who depend on them.

Pastor Tom Barber said all the snow we’ve had is to blame.  He said all that snow keeps people from wanting to go out and, as a result, they’ve seen a significant drop in donations.

“The last month or two, it has been really down because of the weather,” Barber said.  “I understand why, but it’s becoming much more difficult to be able to help all the people coming to us.”

He said they depend on clothing and furniture donations to operate and that they usually see a drop this time of year, but because of how long this winter’s been, they’re seeing even fewer donations at their help center and their toss boxes around town.

“It’s just really had an impact us, you know?” Barber said.  “And we used up all our supplies we had stored and now we’re really just kind of going week to week with all the stuff we’re getting.”

Denver Davis lives at the People’s City Mission, and relies on their resources to survive.

He says since the mission accepts everyone in the cold weather, some men are sleeping on the floor.  This means blankets, as well as other warm supplies, are running dangerously low.

“There’s people that still need your help here with coats and gloves and shoes to keep their feet dry,” said Davis.

Pastor Tom emphasized Lincoln is a generous city and he understands why people don’t want to go out.  But he just wants people to know there are a lot of folks depending on them who aren’t prepared for this weather.

He said they’ve also seen a drop in volunteers serving at their locations.
