WATCH: Eye of Fire in Gulf of Mexico

A pipeline leak caused the fire that has now gone viral

GULF OF MEXICO (KLKN) – It’s being called the “Eye of Fire” that burned in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico after an underwater pipeline leak.

Mexican oil company Pemex said there was a gas leak in a submarine and that caused this rare sight.

Crews work to put water on the fire, that was already burning in water, which drew some amusement from people around the world who saw it on social media. Firefighters say they were using the “fine mist” of water to choke the oxygen out of the air around the blaze.

There were no injuries and the first contained a short time later.
