LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Authorities identified the man killed in a crash with a dump truck just east of Waverly as 86-year-old Fernando Ortiz.

Around 9:20 a.m. Thursday, several first responders were called to the intersection of North 162nd Street and Bluff Road.

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, a Lancaster County Engineering Department dump truck was headed south on 162nd Street when it collided with a westbound Mitsubishi sedan, pushing the Mitsubishi into a ditch.

The area was foggy at the time of the crash, and the dump truck driver failed to stop at the posted stop sign, according to the sheriff’s office.

Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Mitsubishi, 82-year-old Elnore Ortiz, was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

A dog in the Mitsubishi was also taken to a Waverly veterinarian for care.

The crash is still under investigation.
