Canyon Fire Destroys Homes In Valentine

The 100-degree temperatures are complicating efforts for those who have been battling a big fire Sunday night in and around Valentine, Nebraska.

Hundreds of firefighters from surrounding communities have converged about a mile Northeast of Valentine to battle the wildfire, which is at least three-quarters of a mile long.   

Channel 8 has also been told – airplanes have been called in from Denver, and Rapid City, South Dakota, to help, by dropping chemicals on the blaze.

It all started around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, in rough canyon terrain.   

Reports indicate that at least six homes have been burned in the fire. 

 A portion of the town of Valentine or about 200 residents have been evacuated, incuding those at the hospital, and at an assisted living center. 

One hundred and forty-five home are without power at this time. Officials hope to have it back on by mid-afternoon.
