LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — State health officials are investigating after a person suffered a medical issue involving blood clots after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) said the medical event happened two weeks after the person – who was described only as being in their late 40s – got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in mid-March.

Health officials say any significant medical event that occurs after vaccination is taken very seriously and is thoroughly investigated.

Some people who were registered to receive the J&J vaccine at a Douglas County clinic were told they would instead be receiving a different vaccine, but DHHS said that was due to supply issue and is not related to this incident.

A very small percentage of people who receive COVID-19 vaccines experience significant health issues related to the vaccine. This is at least the third incident reported in by health officials in Nebraska.

DHHS will share the results of the CDC review once it is finalized.
