Excessive heat by the weekend
Heat and humidity is headed our way for the weekend and may last into next week. High temperatures will likely be in the triple digits for several days in a row. No precipitation is expected until the end of next week.
Friday will be tolerable. Highs will be in the lower and middle 90s, but the dewpoint won’t be very high. Still hot, just not humid.
While it won’t be terribly hot and humid for eastern Nebraska, it will be a little warmer further west. A Heat Advisory is in place for parts of western Nebraska for temperatures that will get into the 100 t 105 range.
By Saturday, the heat really kicks in. Excessive Heat Watches are in place for much of the eastern half of the state Saturday through Tuesday of next week. The heat index will push to near 110 degrees each afternoon.
Temperatures on Saturday will be at or above 100 degrees.
The dewpoint will be in the middle and upper 60s to the lower 70s.
Thus the heat index will be in the 105 to 110 range.
Heat is the number one weather related killer. Those who should be particularly aware include:
- Young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness and death, as their bodies are less able to adapt to heat than are adults.
- Older adults, particularly those with pre existing diseases, take certain medications, are living alone or with limited mobility who are exposed to extreme heat can experience multiple adverse effects.
- People with chronic medical conditions are more likely to have a serious health problem during a heat wave than healthy people.
- Pregnant women are also at higher risk. Extreme heat events have been associated with adverse birth outcomes such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and infant mortality, as well as congenital cataracts.
