Fitness over fixes: Lincoln fitness experts say healthy habits still matter

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — As the new year begins, a lot of people are thinking about how they want to feel in their own bodies: stronger, healthier and more confident.

For many, weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have offered a new option and, for some, a necessary one.

As weight-loss drugs have become part of the conversation, Lincoln fitness experts said the real focus should be on sustainable changes that help people feel good over the long term.

Good Life Fitness owner and personal trainer Steve Auxier said there’s always room for a more balanced approach.

“One of the best steps for motivation past that 12-week goal is to set good goals first, but have measurable results,” he said.

Auxier said that too often, people feel pressured to see quick results, especially at this time of year.

Instead, he encourages starting small — by walking more, lifting lighter weights, or making one better food choice a day.

“If they are taking any sort of Ozempic or however, I would highly recommend that they weight train,” Auxier said. “Weight training is so beneficial to maintain that muscle mass, and you want to make sure that you resistance train at least twice a week.”

He even encouraged a Channel 8 reporter to pursue their fitness goals.

With a new year ahead, Auxier said the goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress.

“Focus about 5 years, 10 years, 15 years down the road on quality of life and mobility and happiness,” he said. “Our health is the most important asset that we have, and taking that time for yourself is such a win.”
