Head coach Caroline Walters and the Cal Poly volleyball program has announced that libero/defensive specialist Chen Abramovich will join the team in 2020. A transfer from Nebraska, Abramovich will be a redshirt sophomore and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“Chen’s experience with one of the top programs in the country in Nebraska will heighten the level of competition in our gym on a daily basis,” head coach Caroline Walters said of Abramovich. “We anticipate her battling with our other defensive players for the open libero and defensive specialist spots.”

Originally from Kfar Saba, Israel, Abramovich spent two years with the Cornhuskers. As a freshman in 2018, she appeared in one match against Wake Forest before redshirting the 2019 season. During her time there she was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019.

Before going to Nebraska, Abramovich grew up playing volleyball in Israel. In high school, she started every match of her career at Galili High School and helped her team win Israel’s high school championship each year. She also played against some of the best high school competition in the world as Galili twice qualified for the international School Federation World Schools Championships, competing against the top high school team from each country.

“I chose to transfer to Cal Poly for multiple reasons: its high level of education, its location near the beach as the weather reminds me of back home, I’m sure it will be the right place for me to live” Abramovich said. “But most importantly, I chose Cal Poly because of the volleyball program and people who are part of it. One of the most important things was to go to a place where I know there is a good environment and a place I will be supported and that is something that was clear to me since the first time I talked with the coaches. Since the moment I first talked with my teammates I knew I chose the right place.”

She played with Israel’s Junior National Team at the 2016 European Championships and played club volleyball for Hapoel Kfar Saba, leading her team to the ISR National Championship in 2017. She and her team also took first in the U17 Israeli League in 2013 and 2014 and won the U20 title in 2017.

“Chen is the first international student-athlete in my eleven years at Cal Poly, and we welcome her different outlooks and life experiences that will undoubtedly enhance our program,” Walters added.

“I am looking forward to accomplishing all of our goals as a team and win conference titles in the years to come,” said Abramovich. “I think we have a great group of people and talented volleyball players and with our experienced coaching staff I’m sure we can go far in the NCAA Tournament. I can’t wait to get on campus and start practicing for the upcoming season.”
