Friends of fallen officer say it’s ‘like losing a family member’

ST. JOSEPH, MO. (KQTV) — The impact Mario Herrera has had on Nebraska can be seen in every blood donation,  community rally, and prayer for his family. But, he also reached many more lives outside of Nebraska.

In fact, Herrera’s family moved from California to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he spent most of his youth. Attending Mid-Buchanan schools, he quickly made lifelong friends, like Lura Landis and Dan Batliner.

After hearing he was shot in the line of duty late August, state lines didn’t keep these friends from following the case to its somber conclusion.

Heartbroken by the loss of their friend, Batliner says if anything can be learned from this, it’s to cherish those closest to you.
