Husker baseball finding “grit” during win streak

Head coach Will Bolt credits the team's ability to grind out runs at the plate, plus excellent pitching and defense, for its recent success.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska baseball is one of the hottest teams in the Big Ten entering its three-game series at Illinois this weekend.

The Huskers have now won six-straight games after their four-game sweep of Minnesota this past weekend.

Head coach Will Bolt credits the team’s ability to grind out runs at the plate, plus excellent pitching and defense, for its recent success.

“We have a board in the dugout that we keep track of ‘grit’ plays we call them,” Bolt said on Wednesday. “That’s just keeping track of the little things that might not show up in the box score so much or may not think of it so much. But we know if we can full up those ‘grit’ plays, that we have a shot at being a productive offense that day.”

The Huskers have scored the most runs of any team in the Big Ten so far this season and is also in the top three in both team ERA (3rd) and fielding percentage (1st).

“In baseball, that’s what you need to do – do whatever it takes,” said senior Joe Acker. “As a team, if we can not care so much about ourselves and more about just being gritty. We always talk about ‘Gritty Beats Pretty.’ That’s a saying we’ve been using a lot this year, and I think it’s come to fruition this year and we’ve had some success.”

Nebraska (11-4) travels to Illinois (7-8) this weekend with the first pitch on Friday set for 6:00 p.m.
