Husker seniors reflect on careers ahead of unique final home game

Much like the rest of 2020, it will be a much different Senior Day on Saturday when the Huskers take on Minnesota or another opponent if the Gophers are unable to play because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Eighteen Nebraska seniors will step off the Memorial Stadium for the final time on Saturday. Or will they?

Much like the rest of 2020, it will be a much different Senior Day on Saturday when the Huskers take on Minnesota or another opponent if the Gophers are unable to play because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

“Honestly, I don’t know,” said senior offensive lineman Brendan Jaimes. “I don’t think anyone has been in this situation before. Proud to be a senior at Nebraska. Obviously, if there’d be fans I think that’d be pretty cool.”

Jamies and the other Husker seniors also have a decision to make at the end of this season. The NCAA has granted every player an extra year of eligibility because of the shortened seasons nationwide.

However, most of the Big Red seniors say that decision can wait. This week is about focusing on Minnesota and reflecting on what has been a crazy career.

“We all tough guys,” said defensive back Dicaprio Bootle.

Ten members of this senior class have been with the program for five or more years. They’ve been through a coaching change, several coordinators and a whole lot of losing. But it’s only made them stronger.

“I love them all to death,” said senior defensive lineman Ben Stille, an Ashland native. “I think all the adversity we’ve been through has brought us together. A word I would say is resiliency.”

Said Bootle, “Whatever happens between now and forever, we’ll always be close.”

Nebraska and Minnesota kickoff at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The game will be aired on either BTN or FS1.
