‘I hope I can continue the job’: York County commissioner responds to recall effort

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — York County Commissioner LeRoy Ott on Monday responded to a recall petition against him.

“I enjoy working to move York County forward, making decisions with information I’m given,” he said in a formal response. “If trust or confidence has been broken with some, I hope I can continue the job and restore that trust. I take seriously the job of serving all of York County.”

Ott was appointed to represent District 2 on the Board of Commissioners in 2024 and was elected to a full term that year.

Julia Wellman, a District 2 resident, filed the recall petition against Ott last month.

Her statement cited “Perceived lack of trust in his ability to lead effectively.”

She would need to collect 442 signatures from voters in that district for a recall election to take place.

Once the signatures are received, the county clerk’s office has 15 days to check the validity of signatures.

According to York County Clerk Mary Melby, the county board will have to then pass a resolution to hold a special election.

If the election is held, the decision to recall will be based on a majority vote.
