Several injuries reported at massive boat yard fire in Mattapoisett
MATTAPOISETT, Mass. (WLNE) — Fire officials confirm that several people were injured in a massive boat yard fire in Mattapoisett Friday afternoon.
Officials responded to Ned’s Point Road for smoke at a boat yard just before 1:30 p.m.
Buildings, cars, and boats were caught in the flames for four and a half hours before it was under control.
One civilian and three firefighters were rushed to the hospital. Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray said the firefighters suffered heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. The firefighter is expected to be OK.
One of the victim’s family set up a gofundme account asking for donations to help pay for medical expenses. Donations have almost reached $40,000.
According to the gofundme account, the victim ” is currently hospitalized for burns and a shattered femur and has a long road to recovery.”
Nineteen engines responded to the scene.
The Town of Mattapoisett posted that residents in the area might experience discolored water as a result of the fight to battle the blaze.
Witnesses sent video to ABC 6 showing heavy smoke billowing. Black smoke was seen from neighborhoods in surrounding areas.
The National Weather Service detected the smoke from its radar.
Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
