PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The national gas price average is poised to fall back under $4 per gallon this week, according to a new report from GasBuddy.

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.01, according to tracking by GasBuddy. Prices have been falling steadily over the past nine week, though they’re still more than 83.6 cents higher than last year’s average.

As of Sunday, the average price for a gallon of gas in Rhode Island was $4.26 per gallon, down 12.1 cents from last week.

The cheapest price gas in the state stands at $3.84 per gallon, with the highest being $4.78 per gallon.

“By the end of the week, one hundred thousand stations will be at $3.99 or less,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
