Roger Williams Park Zoo mourns ‘Sha-Lei’ the red panda

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Roger Williams Park Zoo announced Tuesday that “Sha-Lei” the zoo’s beloved red panda has died.

“Sha-Lei uplifted and inspired all who met her. While we mourn her loss, her impact on our world is unmistakable, and unforgettable,” the zoo said in a statement.

Sha-Lei was born at Valley Zoo in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, back in 2009. She made her way to Providence in 2013.

The zoo said that Sha-Lei had to be put down after a months-long battle with heart failure. Zoo staff had been monitoring her during that time, conducting weekly ultrasounds and giving her the needed medication.

Sha-Lei was one of two red pandas at the zoo. ABC 6 News visited the exhibit back in 2019.
