Illinois nurses on strike, hundreds of union members join the cause

CHICAGO (CNN) — University of Illinois Hospital (UIC) nurses are on strike; and Monday these nurses got a show of solidarity as hundreds of union members joined the cause. Leaders say it’s the first strike for the union at UIC Medical Center in more than four decades.

The nurses walked off the job over the weekend, with the Illinois Nurses Association Union demanding a comprehensive contract that includes better staffing levels, higher pay, and more personal protective equipment (PPE). Also, the union says there needs to be a set limit on how many patients a single nurse is treating at any one time. However, the hospital believes a set nurse to patient ration does not work.

Around 1,300 nurses had originally planned to join the strike until the courts got involved. A  judge granted a temporary restraining order on the hospital’s behalf Friday, limiting the number of protesters on hospital grounds after a lawsuit was filed citing patient safety concerns.
