Jake Gardner, charged in Scurlock death, has died by suicide, sources say
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Jake Gardner, the man accused of manslaughter in the death of 22-year-old James Scurlock, has died by suicide in Oregon.
Stu Dornan, Gardner’s attorney, held a press conference Sunday evening, confirming that Gardner had died by his own hands. He was scheduled to return to Omaha Sunday afternoon to face his charges.
Dornan said that Gardner left Omaha following Scurlock’s death amid threats and great risk if he stayed. Gardner then went to Northern California for his own safety, Dornan said. With the wildfires raging in Northern California, Gardner was evacuated out of of California and was later in Oregon visiting his parents where he later committed suicide.
Last Tuesday, Gardner was indicted by a grand jury on several charges, including manslaughter, in connection to the shooting death of James Scurlock during the May 30 riots.
Gardner’s charges include manslaughter, use of a firearm to commit a felony, attempted first-degree assault, and terroristic threats.
