LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A disabled couple is in the hospital after a fire early Friday morning near 56th St. and Otoe St., according to Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
The battalion chief tells Channel 8 a man, who is legally blind, ran back into the flames and saved his wife, who has multiple sclerosis. Both suffered what the battalion chief calls “serious” injuries.
The call initially came in just after midnight Friday morning. LFR says crews arrived to heavy flames at the home. That’s when they were able to get the couple who lived in the house to a safer location.
The battalion chief says the cause of the fire is still under review, but the initial investigation indicates it’s a “smoking in bed” situation. The smoke alarms did not appear to be working when crews arrived on scene.
LFR estimates it’s an 80 percent loss to the home with a total estimate of $260,000 in damage.
