Lied Center warning of scammers selling Hamilton tickets at 10 times face value

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lied Center has a scam alert you need to be on the lookout for if you want to see one of the most popular Broadway shows in history.

The Lied Center telling Channel 8 it’s received several reports into its ticket office, some even saying people are trying to sell tickets at 10 times face value on third party websites.

“$500, $800, $1000 for Hamilton tickets, which is not true. None of those are real,” said Lauren Silverman Durban, the communications manager at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Tickets are typically between $59-$159 with some premium tickets costing more than $200, according to Silverman Durban.

Josh Planos with the Better Business Bureau says Hamilton in particular has always been susceptible to scams.

“Essentially for as long as Hamilton has been a show, these tickets have been really difficult to secure,” Planos said.

This is why the Lied Center is encouraging everyone to buy directly through it’s ticket office or website.

“To make sure that: A. You’re not overpaying and, B. The tickets are real,” Silverman Durban said. “If you don’t get your tickets from the Lied Center then we can’t verify them.”

You also must use the Lied Center app in order to download your tickets. This also makes purchasing through third party sites, like social media, difficult.

“You just have no guarantee that that ticket is going to make its way to your wallet or your front door,” Planos said. “You have no guarantee that that money, once it is spent, it’s not coming back.”

And the Lied just wants everyone to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

“It’s been such a long time coming to bring this show to Nebraska,” Silverman Durban said. “We’ve been talking about it for over a year. So we’re really just working on getting that message out there that there are plenty of tickets to be had and to make sure you’re getting real ones.”

The BBB is also encouraging anyone to use a credit card when purchasing those tickets. That way you can argue any fraudulent charges.

Again, there are plenty of tickets available at the Lied Center.
