Light rain possible tonight, otherwise mild through the weekend

Update since the morning show: A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for Gage, Jefferson, Thayer, Nuckolls, Webster, Franklin and Harlan counties in southern Nebraska until noon Thursday.

Warm air coming up from the south moving over colder ground temperatures is causing dense fog to form for some. This area especially could see visibility at or below a quarter mile while this advisory is in effect. Be mindful of possible slick spots.

There was an initial round of very light rain briefly early Thursday morning.

Although it really didn’t amount to much, it was enough to be measurable. That means this is our first measurable precipitation this month since the snow early in January – 25 days ago.

The AM commute will be dry and quite warm for morning hours in January. We’ll be starting with temperatures closer to our average HIGH in the middle 30s, thanks to a warm front.

Cloud cover throughout the day will limit our heating compared to days past, warming to the upper 40s and staying right about there.

We’re not quite done with the chance for some more moisture. Later tonight beyond the evening commute, rain chances increase again.

Stormcast below shows scattered showers redeveloping on the backside of this system this afternoon and evening, diving south tonight across southeast Nebraska. We’ll be warm enough for this to fall as mainly rain.

We’re not expecting a whole lot more, but some may see up to a tenth of an inch through Friday morning.

There could be some embedded thunderstorms in this, but they will not be threatening. The light shade of green (below) means non-severe thunderstorms are possible in Nebraska through tonight. So some could hear some thunder tonight – in January.
