Lincoln Homeless Coalition puts out ‘urgent’ call for socks before more rain comes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Homeless Coalition is trying to collect hundreds of pairs of socks for homeless people in just two days.

The organization is holding an event called Project Connect at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday.

But Jade Fowler said as they were planning, they noticed the weather could create a health hazard.

“The forecast is showing significant amounts of rain,” she said.

The event will have food, bike repairs, haircuts, medical services and much more.

Around 700 people are expected to wait in line to get into PBA.

And the Lincoln Homeless Coalition is concerned people will be soaked by the time they make it inside.

“Having dry feet and dry socks really are catalysts to not having frostbite or not having trench foot or not having to get an amputation,” Fowler said.

The coalition sent out an urgent call for sock donations on Monday. They’re asking the community to bring in socks of all sizes.

“It’s kind of a tight turnaround, but we’re really hoping to have some options for us,” Fowler said.

Socks can be dropped off at the Region V location at 3600 Union Drive or at Pinnacle Bank Arena

“In times that can be very hard in our economic standing, I know that this can be a big ask,” Fowler said. “These folks are our neighbors. And they deserve some dignity and a basic need to be met.”
