Lincoln libraries are helping keep people warm as temperatures drop
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With frigid temps across the state, it is advised that people stay indoors where it’s warm.
But for those who can’t stay in, the City of Lincoln is making sure everyone who leaves home has a safe place to go and recharge at one of its warming centers.
One of those places is any Lincoln public library.
Ryan Wieber, the Director of Lincoln Libraries, says having plenty of activities is always an option at the library, no matter the weather, but when temperatures are extra frigid, it’s even more critical.
“The library is always a place of discovery,” he said. “We strive to be open, no matter the weather, or what it’s like outside.”
Wieber says they don’t have to make too many adjustments during times like these.
“We just want to make sure that our doors are open and we’re fully staffed,” he said, adding that libraries are “an environment that’s safe and comfortable and accessible. ”
Crystal Dunworth, the library services supervisor at Bennett Martin Public Library, knows firsthand how grateful people are who come to the library on extra-cold days like Friday.
“One gentleman actually had ice in his beard from standing out there waiting, so we definitely have people who are looking forward to those doors opening,” she said.
Dunworth says it’s a familiar reaction she recognizes even during the summer, when libraries serve as cooling centers.
“It just feels so good in here, and [they’re] just so happy to be in the library,” she said. “And the best thing is that there’s something for them to do here, it’s not just a space for them to do nothing.”
Dunworth mentions the access to computers and free Wi-Fi, puzzles and games, and, of course, books.
She says even on a cold day like today, more families arrived than expected.
“We were really surprised. We thought with the cold weather, that maybe we wouldn’t see anybody, but we still had kids coming in the door, and I think, as a parent myself, those parents were looking for something for their kids to do, instead of being cooped up all day.”
