Lincoln man found guilty of fatally abusing 22-month-old

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man was convicted Tuesday in the death of a baby.

Jurors found Joshua Tackett guilty of intentional child abuse resulting in death.

On March 12, 2023, a 22-month-old boy was taken to a Lincoln hospital with injuries that were consistent with abuse.

Rudy Requejo Jr. suffered a brain bleed, a black eye, a swollen ankle and bruising, according to court documents.

He was transferred to the children’s hospital in Omaha, where he died five days later.

The boy’s mother, Brittany Cook, is also charged in his death.

Her child abuse trial is scheduled to start on Oct. 24.

Tackett was also found guilty of a drug charge but acquitted of first-degree assault and two weapon charges.

He has a hearing scheduled for Oct. 16 to determine whether his sentence should be enhanced under the state’s habitual criminal law.

His sentencing is set for Oct. 29.
