Lincoln neighborhood pleading for overdue changes to intersection with increased traffic

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Neighbors are raising the alarm once again about an increasingly busy intersection.

30 years later, the fight rages on for something to be done on South 9th and 10th streets.

“It was something the neighborhood association was trying to fix back in 1994,” said Diane Walkowiak, who lives in the neighborhood near the intersection.

Crossing from High Street to get to Van Dorn Park is a challenge, and it’s getting worse.

Neighbors are fighting for a crosswalk, a traffic light, or anything that could improve conditions.

With the expansion of businesses near the intersection, it’s not making it any easier for people trying to cross the street or for some drivers.

“It has only added to the traffic at 10th and High, and the complexity,” said Walkowiak. “We have an additional driveway where traffic is going in and out. This stretch of road is one of the six busiest roads in the city of Lincoln.”

Brenda Uhing lost her son almost six years ago in a car crash at the intersection.

She believes his death could have been prevented.

“I think my son would still be here if there were a light at that intersection,” she said. “It would definitely slow down traffic. I have a little memorial on that corner, and I’ve been there to weed eat, put new pictures up and new flowers, and I have witnessed several times where cars try to turn out, and they can’t see.”

Channel 8 reached out to Lincoln Transportation and Utilities for an update on any progress they’ve made.

LTU provided this statement:

“We are actively working to identify and implement a long-term solution for this challenging intersection, including securing the necessary funding to move that solution forward. Our goal is to ensure any improvements meet the neighborhood’s needs while safely accommodating the high volume of traffic at this location. Enhancing walkability in this area remains a priority, and we have been and will continue engaging closely with the neighborhood as the project progresses.”
