Lincoln Police share car seat safety tips ahead of busy travel week
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — As we expect colder temperatures this week, Lincoln Police are sharing possibly life-saving tips about car seat safety. This is especially important as many of us hit the road for Thanksgiving later this week.
Lincoln Police say to never allow your child to wear bulky clothing underneath the harness of their car seat, including any winter oats or snowsuits. Experts say the coats cause too much separation between the harness and the child, which can allow them to slip out of the seat in a crash.
If you’re worried about your child getting cold, the Academy of Pediatrics said not to forget about hats and mittens. Those will add warmth without interfering with straps.
Officials also says to always dress your child in thin layers as well to help insulate their body.
If you have a little baby, keep their infant seat inside to make sure it stays warm before you head out. Also, use a blanket over the car seat straps to keep your child warm.
LPD also said to make sure to tighten the straps of the car seat harness. If you can pinch the straps, it’s not tight enough.
