Lincoln priest sentenced to jail for giving minor alcohol

A Lincoln priest cited earlier this year for giving a teenager alcohol in 2017 was sentenced to jail time Friday.

A judge sentenced Charles Townsend, 57, to 30 days in jail and 18 months of probation, according to court documents. Half the jail time could be waived for complying with the terms of his probation.

Lincoln Police said that in July of 2017 Townsend provided alcohol to a 19-year-old at a Lincoln residence.

The teenager became drunk and was later driven home by Townsend, police said.

Townsend’s citation, issued in January, was part of a collaborative investigation into the Lincoln Catholic Diocesan staff that was announced on September 6th, 2018, police said.

Townsend has not been charged with any sexual misconduct.
