Lincoln Public Schools touts AVID college readiness program
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Students at Lincoln Public Schools have an opportunity to get college ready with a unique program.
The goal of the AVID program is to help students prepare for success in college.
It offers elective courses to middle and high school students.
Since it began in 2020, the program has grown exponentially in size.
It started with 75 students at Lincoln Northeast High School and now has more than 1,400 students enrolled across five high schools and seven middle schools in the district.
“I wouldn’t know a lot if I wasn’t in AVID and it set me on, like, the right course in the right track in high school to, you know, further better myself and my education,” 12th grader Kaelah Williams said.
The program is a way to bridge the opportunity gap and help students understand how college works and how to be ready once they’re there.
“Students are able to kind of see themselves in a path that maybe they didn’t always think would be possible for them,” AVID teacher Lexi Gardner said.
