LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- The community has the opportunity right now to give a gift to children that lasts a lifetime, swim lessons.

“Drowning is a leading cause of death for children,” Aquatics Director at Northeast YMCA, Tabetha Burnham said. “It is important kids learn water safety skills and we teach kids what water depth looks like.”

Burnham is just one of the many people involved in a community wide swimsuit drive happening now through May 23.

“I was raised on a lake home with a zero entry so we learned to swim at a really young age and it was important we understood what all the dynamics were,” Burnham said.

The community is welcome to donate new and gently used swimsuits for more than 140 children enrolled in grant–based swim lessons this summer. Burnham says this is the perfect time to teach young kids how to swim.

“We are hoping to provide a swimsuit for every kiddo in our program this year,” Burnham said.

The life saving water safety skills are made possible by a swimming lesson grant through Y-USA and in partnership with Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln Community Learning Centers and Family Service Lincoln.

If you are interested, you can drop off swimsuits at any of the four Lincoln YMCA locations.

Cooper YMCA – 6767 S. 14th Street
Copple Family YMCA – 8700 Yankee Woods Drive
Fallbrook YMCA – 700 Penrose Drive
Northeast YMCA – 2601 N. 70th Street

Swim lessons begin on June 1. The swimsuits will be given out to students attending Elliot, Pershing and other surrounding Community Learning Centers.
