Lincoln’s Northwest high school band shines despite no football season
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- Lincoln Northwest’s High School Band is not only resilient but they’re determined to show up for one another.
After a canceled football season, most high school bands would’ve discontinued practices, but Northwest High School ventured forward.
Northwest’s head band director, Paul Kenny says their upcoming “Spirit Night” will showcase just how far they’ve come.
“The students have really made this season happen, it’s one that’s had a lot of hurdles,” Kenny said.
Two rising students in the band, Alexah Maguire and Da’Vion Bland say hardships without a field and practice space helped them create bonds this year.
“It’s been a struggle, because we’ll be learning something, and just right as I understand something, we’re being kicked out of the gym,” Bland said.
“It’s a little scary, but it’s kind of like bonding us all together,” Maguire said. “We’re all doing it together.”
Their first performance this upcoming Thursday will feature song selections from the hit Disney movie Encanto which Kenny says has matched their experiences.
“We chose the show that had a lot of music that dealt with family and bonding,” he said. “Which is kind of what this season has been all about.”
Spirit Night takes place this Thursday at 7 p.m. at Northwest High School in the main gym. More details can be found on Northwest High School’s Facebook.
