Man gets year in jail for flinging fish and carrots in Lincoln DMV

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man learned his fate on Friday for flinging fish inside a DMV office.
Joseph Schrader, 34, was sentenced to a year in jail for misdemeanor criminal mischief.
He also got 90 days for disturbing the peace, but that term will be served at the same time as the criminal mischief sentence.

On May 17, Schrader went into the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles office near Northwest First Street and West Highland Boulevard.
It was that office’s first day in operation.
Court documents say Schrader was “very agitated” and threw a bag of fish and carrots as he left.
Officers found food on the floor, walls and ceiling of the brand-new office.
The building “smelled heavily of fish,” according to an arrest affidavit, as did Schrader when police found him.
He told officers the DMV didn’t issue him an ID.
“Something fishy” was going on there, he said, so he decided to throw fish around.
The mess caused $3,305.50 in damage, court documents say.
At first, the damage was estimated at $9,000, so Schrader was initially facing the possibility of a felony charge.
