Man held without bond in shootout with eastern Nebraska deputies

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A man accused of shooting at deputies in eastern Nebraska made his first court appearance Wednesday.

David Boettcher, 48, is charged with multiple felonies in connection with a gunfight with law enforcement in Washington County.

Judge Francis Barron III ordered Boettcher to be held without bond.

On Jan. 6, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office pulled over a Jeep Cherokee in Arlington, which is 5 miles east of Fremont, because the driver had a suspended license.

Boettcher was in the front passenger seat, and a 1-year-old baby was in the back, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The driver was arrested without incident, but authorities said they discovered that Boettcher had a warrant for domestic assault.

When they approached him, they saw that he was armed, according to an arrest affidavit.

Boettcher started yelling at deputies, authorities said, then got of the Jeep and shot his gun about eight times.

Deputies returned fire, striking Boettcher in the buttocks.

Even after falling to the ground, the state patrol said he continued to resist.

He was flown to an Omaha hospital.

Neither the baby nor any of the deputies were injured.

Authorities said they found two bags hidden in the floorboards of the Jeep.

Those bags contained a total of about 3.5 pounds of methamphetamine, according to the affidavit.

Boettcher is facing eight felonies:

  • Possession of more than 140 grams of methamphetamine
  • Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person
  • Attempted first-degree assault
  • Attempted second-degree assault
  • Intentional child abuse with no injury
  • Use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony
  • Use of a firearm to commit a felony
  • Being a habitual criminal

His next court appearance is set for Jan. 29.
