Man shocked with Taser after threatening people with a hammer at gas station

Nebraska State Patrol arrests man near Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Neb. (KLKN) — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says one man was recovering Monday morning in a Lincoln hospital after he caused injuries to himself at a gas station near Greenwood.

According to a press release, deputies responded to a Cubby’s gas station at the exit 420 interchange of I-80 on a report of a man threatening people with a hammer and attempting to pull them from their vehicles.

Pilots in a Nebraska State Patrol helicopter then saw the man attempting to break into several vehicles near the I-80 Speedway.  Pilots then directed the troopers and deputies to the area.

They found him running across the track into the grandstand area, the patrol says.

After troopers caught up with the suspect, he tried to harm himself with a shard of glass.  The trooper demanded that he drop the glass, but he refused.

The trooper then shocked the man with a Taser, and he was taken into custody, the patrol says.

When authorities arrived, they say the suspect fled the area on foot, heading north on Highway 63. Deputies and troopers searched the area where a foot pursuit occurred near the I-80 Raceway.

The suspect was placed in emergency protective custody at the Lancaster County Mental Health Crisis Center, the patrol says.

Once released, he will be lodged in Cass County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, flight to avoid arrest and vandalism.
