Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announced Wednesday that the annual Uncle Sam Jam firework display in July has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gaylor Baird said such a large gathering could threaten the public’s health and safety. She said even scaling the event back, even to just a fireworks display, could still draw a large crowd.

“With no way to predict how many would make that choice to gather, other than the past turnout which of course has been significant, we have decided to err on the side of caution,” she said.

Gaylor Baird encouraged people to celebrate the holiday in their own yards, and to look forward to the event in 2021.
