Midday Interview: Southview Baptist Church Easter Play
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Southview Baptist Church in Lincoln is gearing up for it’s annual Easter play, which is entering it’s 31st year.
Sylvana Airan with Southview Baptist stopped by Channel 8 News at midday to talk about the performance.
Here is information about the play provided by the church:
‘This Day of Resurrection’
April 9, and 11-13
Southview Baptist Church, 13th and Nebraska Parkway
· The play was started by Sylvana Airan, a Pakistani immigrant, who wrote and now directs the entire event.
· The lavish costumed musical drama This Day of Resurrection is returning to the stage for our 31st year of reenacting the Easter story.
· It is an annual event for many families as they prepare for the Easter season. The Easter story is reenacted in a little over an hour.
· NEW THIS YEAR: Due to overflow crowds last year, we have a system to reserve a free ticket. Go to this link for tickets on March 16: https://southviewbaptist.org/easter-performance
· This performance is a gift to our community and admission is free. No offering is collected.
· Due to action, loud noises, and realistic scenes, the performance is recommended for ages 7 and older. Childcare is not provided. A family room is available.
· It is designed “in-the-round” so the audience feels like part of the scene.
· Nearly everyone in the church plays a role, from babies to senior adults (crowd scene, singing, costumes, kitchen, greeting, parking, and childcare are just a few of the essential roles.)
· Several generations of church families have participated over the years. Children who portrayed the infant Jesus have grown up to fill other roles, or to sing in the chorus.
· There’s a whole lot of baking going on! About 200 dozen cookies (most of them homemade) are served at the fellowship that follows each of the five performances. Cookies are provided by church members and friends.
· After the performance, children are invited to pet the live animals that were in the play. Not surprisingly, the fainting goats are quite popular and the baby lambs.
· This reenactment is accomplished with only ONE full dress rehearsal the Sunday before performances! (Various subgroups practice independently, but only once with everyone together.)
