Multiple rounds of snow this week; light snow later Monday
There are many chances for accumulating snow this upcoming week. Temperatures are about to get a lot colder, too.
Morning wind chills Wednesday night into Thursday could be around 10-20 below zero across eastern Nebraska.
Digging into the details of the snow potential this week, we’re tracking three systems. The first system will influence the second round of snow as that round rides in on the heels of the first.
The first round of snow will be fairly light, starting up Monday afternoon and evening. This round will be moving in from the north, making it through some of southeast Nebraska by Monday night.
This round will be very important to watch as it will play a crucial part in how the next system behaves. It could eat up enough dry air to help us see more snow through Wednesday, or it could hurt those snow chances by steering the next system a bit farther south.
Most of the accumulating snow for Monday night through early Tuesday morning will be in northeast Nebraska where a Winter Weather Advisory is in place from noon Tuesday through midnight. Fluffy, blowing snow may affect travel in that area as wind gusts approach about 25 mph.
Measurable snow will be possible for a lot of us though, with amounts around a half an inch to an inch. Dry air will limit this first round, so do not be surprised if this round doesn’t produce much. Small amounts can still play a dangerous part in slickening up roads, though.
The next round moves in from the south, and it will happen Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon.
This round has the potential for a lot more snow. Dry air also looks to affect the beginning chances for snow on Tuesday before more moisture comes in and snowfall rates pick up by early Wednesday morning.
Stormcast below shows the timing of what that round will look like below.
Snow totals will increase the farther south you go in Nebraska toward the Kansas border (similar to what other systems we’ve seen this winter).
A Winter Storm Watch is in place for the southernmost counties in Nebraska starting Tuesday afternoon/evening through Wednesday afternoon.
The heavier snow will add up closer to the Kansas border into Kansas and Missouri.
This will be a forecast that we are continually looking into to work on the details getting closer to Tuesday and that second round of snow. Again, we’ll be watching closely how round one plays out as a key detail to our forecast then for accumulating snow through Wednesday. Be sure to check back frequently!
