Nebraska Dept. of Education revising math standards
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Board of Education is looking at revising the current math standards. One of the reasons they say it’s time to revise them is there are too many standards right now.
Another issue the board is trying to solve is making sure minorities have a fair chance at succeeding. Right now, they score well below white students.
The board also wants all students to be prepared for careers in Nebraska.
Cory Epler, the chief academic officer for NE. Dept. of Education, explained why it’s important for students to understand mathematics as it relates to Nebraska’s career.
“As we think about the industries that continue to drive Nebraska’s economy, we want to make sure that students also have mastered mathematics skills that is required for them to be successful employees in those [careers],” Epler said.
The first draft of the revised math standards is due next month. The board is hoping to have the final draft in August with the final vote in September.
