Nebraska homeowners insurance rates projected to rise 10% this year

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Insurance rates keep climbing for homeowners in Nebraska.

A new study shows premiums are expected to increase by 10% by the end of 2025.

And that’s after several years of increases.

According to S&P Global, the percentage increase in insurance rates has grown every year since 2019, soaring by 22.7% in 2024. That was the highest jump in the United States.

Nebraska is no stranger to severe weather, and that’s largely the driving force behind these numbers.

The Cornhusker State has seen a flurry of severe thunderstorms already this year. With no signs of slowing down, insurers are having to keep up.

Omega Insurance Group in Lincoln said homeowners are feeling the impact.

“Those rates have sometimes doubled or even tripled in the last several years,” said Ryan Sanee, co-owner and agent at Omega. “The driver is the severity and frequency of storms.”

Channel 8 went door to door Wednesday evening listening to Lincoln homeowners.

The consensus was “it is what it is,” but some are still a bit concerned.

One home told Channel 8 he hasn’t paid much attention to his rate because he has other rising expenses to focus on.

Sanee said as long as Nebraska keeps seeing severe weather like it has recently, the trend will continue.

“Until we see a reduction in severity of storms, we’re going to see these rates continue to climb, unfortunately,” he said.

To combat this climb, Omega Insurance said you might want to look into higher-deductible plans.
