LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Nebraska inmate was charged with first-degree murder Monday in the death of another prisoner.

Philip Garcia was an inmate at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and died in October 2022.

Whenever an inmate dies, a grand jury is required to determine whether a crime was committed.

Tyler Stanford, Garcia’s cellmate at the time of his death, was indicted by the grand jury.

Stanford is currently being held at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution for second-degree assault on an officer and other charges.

He will appear in district court on Tuesday via video conference.
