Nebraskans stand to lose $7,745,600 in unclaimed tax monies from 2019

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Internal Revenue Service estimates that nearly 7,800 Nebraskans may have refunds owed to them from unclaimed 2019 tax refunds.
The IRS said almost 1.5 billion in refunds has gone unclaimed from people who did not file tax returns in 2019. They said the average refund is $893 for that year.
According to the IRS website, there are $7,745,600 in unclaimed monies for Nebraskans. The IRS said all 2019 tax returns have until July 17, to file before the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.
“The 2019 tax returns came due during the pandemic, and many people may have overlooked or forgotten about these refunds,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “We want taxpayers to claim these refunds, but time is running out. People face a July 17 deadline to file their returns. We recommend taxpayers start soon to make sure they don’t miss out.”
Typically, taxpayers have three years to file refunds for the tax year, the date has been extended for the 2019 tax year due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
The IRS said by not filing 2019 tax returns, low-income families may lose the Earned Income Tax Credit that could be worth $6,557.
