LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A former northeast Nebraska teacher will spend two years behind bars for sexually abusing a student.

Cali Heikes, 26, was sentenced Wednesday in Wayne County District Court for first- and second-degree sexual abuse by a school employee.

Heikes, who taught at Winside Public Schools, was arrested in January after investigators learned that she was in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

The relationship began sometime in December, according to an arrest affidavit.

After her prison sentence, Heikes will serve an 18-month term of supervised release.

She was also ordered to register as a sex offender, court documents say.
