LPD said the incident happened around 7:20 p.m. when officers responded to a disturbance involving juveniles in the area of N. 47th St. and Cleveland Ave.

While interviewing those on the scene, officers heard a gunshot near N. 46th St. and Madison Ave.

LPD said after interview witnesses in the area, a group was arguing with Benzel’s wife near that intersection. Police said Benzel left his property and walked over to the place the argument was taking place.

LPD said Benzel made some verbal threats toward the group before raising a gun and firing.

Officers arrived minutes later and found the victim with a single gunshot wound, according to police. They performed life-saving measures on her before she was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

“Our thoughts are with her loved ones,” LPD said in a press release late Tuesday.

Police said Benzel was taken into custody without incident. LPD said the murder weapon was found.
