University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police have identified the man found dead in a small creek on UNL’s East Campus Saturday as 45-year-old James Lawrence of Lincoln.

UNLPD Asst. Chief Charlotte Evans said Lawrence had no known affiliation to the university. Evans said it’s unclear how long he had been in the creek, but it appears he had been deceased for several days.

A passerby reported seeing the body in the creek near 48th and Francis Streets shortly after 7:00 p.m. Saturday. The Lincoln Police Department’s crime scene unit arrived on location around 8:15 to help with the investigation.

University officials were notified of the incident since the body was found on UNL property. A timely warning bulletin was issued at 9:30 p.m. to faculty, staff and students.

The cause of death is undetermined at this time pending toxicology results. Evans said there did not appear to be signs of physical violence.

People’s City Mission confirmed Lawrence lived at the shelter for about two years, but left this past fall.

PCM tells us they are not sure where he has been living since then.

If anyone has information about this case or had been in contact with Lawrence recently, call UNL Police at (402) 472-2222.
