Scammer talked Lancaster County man out of $9,000, deputy says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lancaster County man lost $9,000 after a scammer told him to buy bitcoin, the sheriff’s office says.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said Tuesday that the 66-year-old man got a text saying there was a fraudulent charge on his Amazon account.
He then called a number and spoke with a man named Randy, Houchin said.
Randy told the victim that to make sure his money is safe, he needed to take it out of his bank and put it into a bitcoin account.
So, the man did what he was told. In total, he pulled out $9,000 and put it into the account.
Houchin said the victim became suspicious when Randy then asked him to take money out of his wife’s account.
“If you’re asked to buy cards, bitcoin, any of those, please put the red breaks on before you lose your money,” Houchin said. “It’s a scam.”
